GhostNet is a cyber espionage operation first publicly exposed in March 2009 by the Information Warfare Monitor, following a 10-month investigation that began with suspected intrusions against Tibetan organizations. The operation is assessed with high confidence to be of Chinese origin, though direct links to the Chinese government have not been conclusively proven. Its primary motivation is intelligence gathering, targeting high-value political, economic, and media entities worldwide to exfiltrate sensitive information and enable long-term surveillance. GhostNet is distinguished by its extensive global reach, having compromised at least 1,295 computers across 103 countries, focusing on diplomatic missions, government ministries, and non-governmental organizations. The group also operates under the alias "Snooping Dragon".
